Chinese Individualized Instruction
Pronunciation and Romanization (also called P & R tests, only for 101.51 students)
During Chinese 101.51 you will learn a system for representing the sounds of the Chinese language with the Roman alphabet. This system is called pinyin. You will learn this system from Pronunciation and Romanization Module (P&R) and the tapes that go with it. There are six sections. Four of these are in Chinese: Communicating in the Culture, and the remainder will be given to you as handouts. After you master each section you must pass a computerized diagnostic test. There are six of these tests and they are graded pass/fail. To pass you must score 80% or above. You may take each test as many times as you need. When you pass the test please print out the results (you need to pay the receptionist 10 cents per page) and give them to the receptionist. Your name may be cut off on the printout. It is your responsibility to make sure your name is on your P&R when the printout is put in the Chinese box behind the front desk. Failure to have a legible name on the printout will cause the instructors to require you to take the test again. You must take the tests along with your progress in Units 1 and 2. You may not start Unit 2 before you finish P&R #5. Likewise, you must finish P&R #6 before beginning Unit 3. P&R computerized diagnostic tests are available in the computer lab at Central Classrooms 345.
If you cannot print out your test report after you have finished a test, please write down your test results (eg. how many have you answered correctly, and the percentage of correction) on a piece of paper. Ask a lab assistant to witness your test screen to verify the information you have put on the paper, and then ask him or her to sign and leave contact information for further verification. We will take it as the official test report. If you cannot provide any written evidence showing that you have passed the test, you will have to do it again.
