The Asian Warrior and Martial Arts Film
TR: 1:30 - 3:18. Call No. 21521-4

This course examines the history and aesthetics of martial arts films by situating them both in terms of traditional Asian thought and in transnational contexts of production, circulation, and reception. Our course will begin with the inception of Chinese martial arts films in the silent period, and continue to the development of Kurosawa's samurai films, to the Shaw Brothers swordsplay and Kung Fu movies in the 1960s and 70s, concurrent with American/Hong Kong action thrillers staring Bruce Lee, and culminating in contemporary productions involving Hollywood and East Asia.

Course taught in English, no foreign language ability required.
