Classroom Instructions (hereafter, CI)*
* Listen and respond to the instructions with appropriate gestures of
speech (in English); for example, you should be able to comprehend
when the teacher says "kiite kudasai" (please listen) and indicate
that you are listening (you can just put your hand by your ear).

On-line lecture: GUP #1-11

smoothly with on-line audio materials. For every GUP, read the
Miscellaneous Notes in the textbook. Pay careful attention to their
meaning. Your instructor will provide visual aids with contexts in
which it is appropriate to say the phrases you have practiced. Try to
learn the association between context and speech. You should be
learning not only how to say something in Japanese, but also when to
say what.
* For all ACT sessions, you should come to class prepared to PERFORM
in Japanese. Practice the assigned segments with the CD-ROM or the
audio tapes until you can hear and say them smoothly and accurately.
Also, read all relevant notes and explanations.

1C Eavesdropping ALL; Utilization #1-10
This ACT session will require that you have listened to the
Eavesdropping selections and have gone through some of the Utilization
exercises. Eavesdropping involves listening to conversations between two
Japanese speakers for Comprehension. In Utilization, you will synthesize
all of the skills and contextual knowledge in Japanese you have gained
through the practice of CC's, Drills, and Application Exercises to
accomplish communicative tasks.
Preparing for Eavesdropping
Listen to the Japanese conversational selection. Picture the conversational
situation, and answer the questions in English. Recall the Japanese in the
conversation in your mind to help you comprehend the selection and answer
the questions. Never attempt a sentence-by-sentence or, worse,
word-for-word translation of the selection. It simply won't work!
Your teacher may give you a quiz or a comprehension exercise.
Preparing for Utilization
Grasp the conversational context, described in English, and think how the
conversation might flow. Practice saying your part of the conversation as
assigned.
Your instructor will spot check your preparation.
