China Reinterpreted
DEALL alumnus Leo Shingchi Yip publishes China Reinterpreted: Staging the Other in Muromachi Noh Theater (Lexington Books, 2016). Yip analyzes the various images of China manifested in a group of noh plays that feature Chinese characters and motifs (karagotomono). The book looks into the dramaturgy as well as the cultural and sociopolitical agendas involved in the interpretations of Chinese motifs in medieval noh theater. By adopting the theories of Self and Other, Yip reconfigures the ways these “Chinese” noh plays are viewed and offers a case study of the representation of the Other within an intra-Asia context. Yip is associate professor at Gettysburg College.
