Admissions

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (DEALL) offers courses leading to the Master of Arts and Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Literatures, with specialties in Chinese or Japanese literature, linguistics, or language pedagogy. The graduate program is designed to give students the opportunity to achieve a high level of scholarly competence and to develop the capacity to contribute knowledge to their field. DEALL follows University rules and procedures, as listed in the Graduate School Handbook and the Graduate School Bulletin. The following guidelines, which partly overlap general University procedures, are particular to the DEALL program.

M.A. Admission

Requirements:
  1. B.A. in Chinese or Japanese (or the equivalent);
  2. Minimum undergraduate and graduate GPAs of 3.00 (on the 4.00 scale) or B.
  3. A student entering the M.A. program without the stipulated preparation must demonstrate a reading knowledge of either Chinese or Japanese (modern and/or classical) equivalent to three years of study.
  4. A student may be admitted conditionally and be required to satisfy certain B.A. requirements before being granted regular graduate admission.
  5. The M.A. curriculum is designed for students to enter in the autumn quarter. Those proposing to enter during another quarter must contact the Graduate Studies Committee Chair.

Ph.D. ADMISSION

Please note that we do not admit students directly into the PhD program. Students who apply for the PhD will need to pass an evaluation at the end of their first year after admission, before being admitted to the PhD program.

Requirements:

  1. M.A. in Chinese or Japanese (or the equivalent);
    All above admission requirements for the M.A. apply to the Ph.D.;
  2. Sample research papers.
  • A student who is completing an M.A. in DEALL needs to pass an evaluation by the entire graduate faculty in the appropriate language area before being admitted to the Ph.D. The evaluation, held in the final quarter of the Masters program, consists of a review of the following materials, to be submitted by the student to the Graduate Studies Committee Chair:
    1. A typed, three-page, double-spaced statement of purpose in which the student describes his/her plan of study for the Ph.D. program, including fields of interest, projected course work, and possible dissertation topics.
    2. Two samples of your best work: a seminar paper, a project, a chapter from the MA thesis in progress, etc.
    3. Your advisor's reference letter
    4. Up-to-date OSU graduate transcripts (for those who attended OSU).
  • Deadline for submission of these materials is February 15, preceding the autumn quarter for which admission is sought.
  • After reviewing the submitted materials and considering the students academic performance, the faculty in the appropriate language area will vote to admit or deny entry into the doctoral program.
  • Students admitted into our Ph.D program with M.A.s from other departments will pass through a similar evaluation process at the end of their first year after admission.
