Ohio State Academic and Business Exchange Programs
Bridging the Cultural Gap
The Ohio State University prepares the next generation of Ohio's scholars and business and government leaders to participate and compete in the global market place through its exchange programs with China and Japan.China
Ohio students can participate in any one of several possible exchange programs with Chinese universities, administered by DEALL and the College of Humanities. Ohio State has an active exchange agreement with several universities in China, the most important being the Beijing Language and Cultural University and Shandong Province's Qingdao Haiyang University. (The Shandong exchange was at Yantai University until Summer 1997.) The program in Shandong also involves our students in an internship program teaching English to speakers of Chinese -- for more information, including scholarships and other financial aid opportunities, visit our US/China Links, a part of the OSU Chinese Flagship Program site. Each year six to eight Ohio State students receive language scholarships to study Chinese. In addition, DEALL's most advanced Chinese language students compete for special scholarships to study abroad. In any given academic year, Ohio students receive scholarships to study at universities in both China and Taiwan. Not only is Ohio State actively bridging the gap between Mandarin Chinese speakers and native English speakers, it also is leading the way in Cantonese language materials development. Cantonese is a dialect of Chinese which is spoken by over fifty million people. For the first time, American diplomats and business leaders will be able to be trained in intermediate to advanced-level spoken Cantonese through multi-media materials developed in the OSU Cantonese Project, DEALL's joint project with the Foreign Language Center.
Japan
OSU students can choose from the following different kinds of exchange and internship programs in Japan:
- International Exchange programs with Hokkaido University, International Christian University, Nanzan University,Tsukuba University, and Waseda University (one academic year)
- OSU Japanese Language Study Abroad Program in Kobe (every other spring)
- Ohio-Saitama Summer Internship Program (summer)
- OSU-Ichimiya Group Internship Program (6 months or one year)
- Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies, Yokohama Japan (summer or 10-month).
Study Abroad
Ohio State students can study at one of four major universities in Japan: International Christian University, Nanzan University, Tsukuba, and Shoin University. Advanced Japanese language students can compete for scholarships for study abroad. About six to eight students are chosen for scholarships each year. Students can also participate in the Saitama business internship program managed by the Institute for Japanese Studies. About five students go to Japan each summer for hands-on experience in a major Japanese company. DEALL students can now compete for additional hands-on experience in Japanese companies affiliated with the Nissen Chemitec Corporation. One student is chosen each year for extensive training in Japan, learning first hand how business culture operates on a day-to-day basis. In exchange, a representative from the Nissen Corporation comes to Ohio State to learn about American educational and business culture. This grass roots program is one more way that Ohio State is preparing tomorrow's leaders to effectively participate in the world economy.[ Top of Page ]
