OSU Japanese Language Study Abroad Program in Kobe
Spring Quarter 2000
The Program - The Japanese Study Abroad Program is a ten-week intermediate/advanced language and culture program offered at the Shoin Daigaku Kaikan (Japan Study Center) in Kobe, Japan during Spring Quarter 2000. This program is offered as a collaborative effort between the OSU Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures and Kobe Shoin Women's University, Japan.
The Location - Classes will be held at the Shoin Daigaku Kaikan and Kobe Shoin Women's University which are located about one-half hour west of Osaka. Shoin Daigaku Kaikan is about ten minutes from the main campus of Kobe Shoin Women's University, by public transportation.
Eligibility - The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors (i.e., including non-OSU students) who have had at least two and one-half years (or the equivalent) of college-level Japanese instruction before the program commences in March 2000.
Courses and Credit - The following intermediate and advanced language courses will be offered:
- Japanese 509: 5 quarter hours (for third year students)
- Japanese 510/511: 10 quarter hours (for intensive students)
- Japanese 612: 5 quarter hours (for fourth year students)
- Japanese 722: 5 quarter hours (for fifth year students)
- EALL 697: 10 quarter hours (for third, fourth, and fifth year students)

Students will earn 15 quarter hours of graded Ohio State credit. Language classes will be taught in the mornings. The afternoons will be devoted to the project and culture courses and related cultural activities. The culture course includes field trips to Osaka, Kyoto, and Himeji. The program also includes a one week homestay at Saihaku-Cho, Tottori Prefecture, and a company visit.
Accommodations - Students will be housed in single rooms at the Shoin Daigaku Kaikan. Students will receive a weekly food allowance of yen, approximately $180.00, with which they will purchase their meals at outside restaurants. Students may also prepare their own meals at the Kaikan kitchen facilities.
Program Fee - The estimated program fee is $ 5,500.00. This fee includes Ohio State tuition, room, board, and partial in-country transportation. The program fee does not include airfare to and from Japan. However, a substantial portion of student airfares will be covered through a generous scholarship from Nissen Chemitec Corporation (IJP USA, Inc. Scholarship). Students should plan to bring extra money for incidentals and personal travel.
Insurance - All participants must carry Ohio State Student Health Insurance or other insurance which has coverage in Japan. Students with insurance other than Ohio State Student Health Insurance must verify that their insurance offers coverage (including hospitalization) in Japan. Ohio State Student Health Insurance operates on the reimbursement basis. Therefore, students are advised to have adequate financial resources for health emergencies. No driving is permitted in Japan.
Travel - The Office of International Education will assist students in arranging group air travel to Japan. Students traveling with the group will be met at the airport and taken to the Shoin Daigaku Kaikan. Students who arrive individually are responsible for arranging their own transportation to the Shoin Daigaku Kaikan. Students will be responsible for arranging their own departures from Japan.
Grants & Financial Aid - Applicants to the Japanese Study Abroad Program are encouraged to apply for the IJP USA Scholarship. Please indicate your interest on page 4 of the application form.
