Chinese Major Program

B.A. Degree in Chinese

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures offers an undergraduate major in Chinese. The major program includes studies in language, literature, and linguistics. The total hours for a Chinese major are 55, in addition to 20 hours of prerequistes. A course counted for one category can not be counted for another category at the same time. Chinese majors interested in entering the Honors Program in DEALL should consult with the Undergraduate Director, Naomi Fukumori.

PREREQUISITES AND REQUIREMENTS

Effective Autumn Quarter 2005, the Chinese major program prerequisites and requirements are as given below:

Prerequisites: (20 hrs.)

    C101.01, 102.01, 103.01 or their SPEAC or II equivalents.
    C210 or 211(Note that majors should NOT take C104 but 210 or 211 in its place)

Requirements: (55 hrs.)

A. Language (30 hrs.)
    C210 or 211 (whichever was not taken as a prerequisite)

B. Culture (5 hrs.)
    C231 or 232
C. Literature (5 hrs.)
    C251, 252, 501, 502, 503, or 504
D. Language, Literature and Linguistics (10 hrs.)
    C501, 502, 503, 504, 580, 600, 602, 603, 610, 611, 612, 651, 652, 674, 678, 680, 681, 683, 690, 693, 698 (5 hrs. maximum each for C693 and 698)
E. East Asian Thought (5 hrs.)
    EALL 341, 683; History 342, 545.01, 545.02, 545.03, 545.04, 546; Comp Studies 641, or EALL H399 (for honors studens)
