Pledge to Students

In planning and implementing its conversion from quarters to semesters for summer 2012, DEALL is committed to protecting the academic progress of students.

How Ohio State Will Protect Students’ Academic Progress:
  1. Students completing a quarter-plus-semester degree program will receive approximately the same amount of instruction as under a quarter calendar.
  2. Full-time tuition (general and instructional fees) for an academic year under semesters will not cost more than tuition for that same year would have cost under quarters.
  3. The change should not adversely affect students’ financial aid.
  4. Academic units will continue to provide intentional, purposeful advising.
  5. Good planning around a student’s major will be particularly important, and the university will provide that support to students who begin their academic career under quarters and complete it under semesters.
The Importance of Advising:
Students will vary considerably in their academic progress, and each student’s plan for completing degree requirements will need to be determined individually. This means that students and their advisors must work together to develop effective plans leading to timely graduation as the university converts to semesters. Academic advisors will understand how the changes in courses and curricula may affect students’ degree programs, will know where and how programs can be flexible, and will be prepared to assist students in planning their remaining time to graduation.

What Students Must Do to Protect Their Academic Progress:
  1. decide on their major and degree within a time compatible with four-year graduation;
  2. meet the standards for progress defined by their academic unit and continue to complete appropriate course loads successfully; and
  3. actively develop and follow academic plans in consultation with their academic advisors.

Language Courses

Regular Language Course Number Conversion (Quarter >> Semester)
[In the semester system, the present 3-course sequence for each level will be reduced to 2-course sequences.]

Level Two: 104, 205, 206 >> 1103, 2102
Level Three: 507, 508, 509 >> 4101, 4102
Level Four: 610, 611, 612 >> 5101, 5102
Level Five (Chinese): 694 (Chuncao) >> 5103, 5104
Level Five (Japanese): 710, 711, 712 >> 5103, 5104

Intensive Language Classes
210/211; 310/311; 510/511 >> 2141/2152; 4142/4152

Semester Credit Hours for Language Courses
1101, 1102, 1103 = 4 semester credit hrs. each (total of 12 hrs for GEC lang. requirement)
2102 = 5 semester credit hrs.
4101, 4102 = 5 semester credit hrs.
All language courses above Level Three = 3 semester credit hrs.

Bridge Courses
DEALL will offer "bridge" courses to regular classroom-track students who fail to complete a full level of language by the end of spring quarter 2012. However, we strongly urge students to make every effort possible to complete the level they began in academic year 2011-12. Doing so will make the transition to semesters much more seamless. Students who complete 103 in spring 2012 will enroll in 1103 in the fall of 2012. Students who complete 206 will enroll 4101.

Individualized Instruction
Students transitioning from quarters to semesters in Individualized Instruction program will simply pick up at the level where they left off. Take a look at a detailed chart showing where a student should pick up in the semester system sequence of II courses (at least through 104),

Non-Language Courses

All non-language courses taught in DEALL are worth 3 semester credits. For a complete list of course equivalents in the quarter and semester systems, see Course Conversion Guide Search in the Links section below.

Major Requirements

Students entering OSU in the fall of 2012 will adhere to the new semester requirements for majors in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Total credit hour requirements for the three majors have been made uniform: 33 total required credit hours (down from 55 in the quarter system) and 15 prerequisite credit hours. The required categories and the number of courses required for each category are basically the same in the semester system as they were in the quarter system.

For students crossing over from quarter system to semester system, the registrar's office will multiply the credit hours taken on the quarter system by 2/3 to calculate total semester credit hour equivalent. The semester transition degree audit, which is currently available, will show you what your quarter classes look like in semesters, in addition to what requirements you have completed and those you still need to complete. If you see the following message: “PLEASE SEE YOUR ADVISOR FOR MAJOR REQUIREMENTS” on this audit, it means that your major requirements have not been coded into the degree audit system at this time, but will be soon. Log into your Student Center and run your semester transition degree audit. Talk with your academic advisor if you have questions.

Minor Requirements

Students entering OSU in the fall of 2012 will adhere to the new semester requirements for majors in Chinese, East AsianJapanese, and Korean. Total credit hour requirements for the four minors have been made uniform: 14 required and 15 prerequisites. The required categories and the number of courses required for each category are basically the same in the semester system as they were in the quarter system.
