This course addresses changing conceptions of the environment in China as expressed in oral and written literature.

How do novelists, poets, internet creators (UPzhu, etc.), and folk artists in China create “literature of the environment” (shengtai wenxue 生态文学)in an era of global and local environmental change?

· Blockbuster Sci-Fi & Film: Analyze The Three-Body Problem, The Wandering Earth, and Soul Mountain.
· Digital & Web Culture: Web fiction, graphic novels, and creations by internet “UP zhu”.
· Nature & Myth: Discover oral poetry and stories featuring the Snow Leopard, Jade Rabbit, and Dragon Eggs.
· Global Themes: Discuss eco-anxiety, deep ecology, and the future relations between humans and nature

This course fulfills “literature” requirement for majors & minors
