This course examines the historical roots and the evolution of manga and anime as an integral part of Japanese culture. Dating back to early modern period (1600s-1868), Japanese comics tradition has undergone critical transformation and has reflected historical and social changes in Japan. In this course, we will explore a sampling of readings of these comics as well as key anime examples while keeping in mind such critical interdisciplinary questions as: How do we read manga? What is “media-mix” and how does it help us understand the manga and anime industry? How do we conceptualize anime in the context of postmodernism and contemporary society? How do these industries represent Japan in the international cultural sphere?
