Position: Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) in Japanese Linguistics
 
Position Overview
 
The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (DEALL) at The Ohio State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Japanese linguistics with a start date of August 15, 2027. We seek an outstanding scholar in any area of Japanese linguistics. The successful candidate will teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, helping them develop the analytical skills needed to investigate Japanese language data while engaging with current debates in linguistics and related fields.

Performance Objectives:
  • Conducts a robust research program in Japanese linguistics, engaging with one or more subfields of the discipline and employing methodologically rigorous approaches to uncover new insights about the Japanese language while addressing significant research questions.
  • Teaches undergraduate courses in Japanese linguistics, language, and culture, fostering students' curiosity about language and helping them develop analytical skills and practical knowledge that enrich their understanding of the Japanese language and support their language learning for professional careers and academic success.
  • Teaches and mentors M.A. and Ph.D. students in the Japanese graduate program, providing advanced training in Japanese linguistics and related research methodologies while contributing actively to graduate education and mentorship across all areas of the program (Linguistics, Language Pedagogy, Literature, Culture and Media Studies).
  • Contributes to a collaborative intellectual environment by fostering synergies with faculty in the Japanese program, East Asian linguistics, and related programs across the university, and by participating in interdisciplinary research and teaching initiatives.
  • Contributes to the department, college, and university through service and committee work as appropriate to rank.
Education and Experience Requirements
Required:
  • PhD in Japanese linguistics or a related field in hand by August 15, 2027. ABDs welcome to apply.
  • Native or near-native fluency in both English and Japanese
Desired:
  • College-level teaching experience
  • Ability to provide quantitative training to help students approach and understand Japanese interactions through language data
