Intro / Schedule 2012 / Requirements and Fees / Chinese Version (中文版)
Introduction

Our CFL internship introduces the “performed culture” approach to instruction that has produced many successful speakers of Chinese and Japanese. This approach, which focuses on developing ability to perform accurately in the target language and in a culturally-appropriate manner, is currently being studied by Wuhan University, Nanjing University, and Guizhou Normal University. Employing eclectic techniques and methods, the goal of this approach is to produce speakers of the target language who are accepted by natives of the target culture and welcomed to participate in adult professional society.
This internship consists of two important and complimentary parts:
a) An intensive 4-week teacher training program taught by professors from Ohio State and experts from other universities. Participants will practice teach American learners of Chinese and take classes on East Asian language pedagogy.
This teacher training program has been training practitioners since 1993 and graduates of the program can be found throughout the US and Greater China. In 2009, Hanban sent instructors from 18 Chinese universities to our program in Qingdao with excellent results.
b) A 17-week period of observation of and contribution to the Chinese program at the Ohio State University.
Interns will visit a graduate-level East Asian Language pedagogy class, observe Chinese language courses for students at many levels, and assist an instructor to deliver courses or develop teaching materials designed for use by programs using the Performed Culture approach.
Note: This program does not grant Ohio State University graduate credit. Please contact your local graduate advisor to discuss the possibility of transfer credits.
