East Asia is a hotbed of technological innovation. Ever wondered why the world’s most advanced computer chips are manufactured in Taiwan? Curious about the World Humanoid Robot Games and the World Robot Contests hosted in China? Keen to find out what it would be like to interact with PARO, the therapeutic baby harp seal invented in Japan? Interested in learning more about how young Koreans would use AI for fortunetelling among many other AI-powered leisure activities? And why are East Asian countries notably more enthusiastic about AI than the rest of the world? 

This course lets you explore how media respond to the rapid technological and social changes in East Asia, ranging from sci-fi stories to AI-generated micro-dramas and adaptations to virtual K-Pop groups, videogames, manga, movies, advertisements and more. The course will also give you hands-on opportunities to experiment with AI and other tech tools as you pursue your own individual and collaborative projects at the intersection of technology, media, and culture.
