Teaching of East Asian Languages and Literatures Graduate Certificate (TEALL)
Strong teaching skills are one of the most important skills for graduate students. Completion of the coursework in this certificate will give graduate students the tools to convey the importance of East Asian languages and literatures to their students, stir excitement, and make them relevant to students’ lives.
Open to:
- This is an embedded program which requires a student to be enrolled in a graduate degree program to complete the certificate.
Guidelines:
- Credit hours required: Minimum of 12 credit hours.
- Overlap with courses in degree:
- Maximum 50% overlap with courses in a degree program (i.e., MA or PhD)
- Grades required:
- Minimum C- for a course to be listed on the certificate.
- Minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA for all certificate course work
- Approval Required: The certificate coursework must be approved by the Graduate Studies Committee.

Required coursework:
- Required core course (3 credit hours)
- EALL 8701: Teaching East Asian Languages at the College Level (3)
- Practicum (3-6 credit hours)
Choose one or two of the following courses:

- EALL 7704: Teaching Practicum in East Asian Languages (1-5)
- EALL 7706: Teaching Practicum in East Asian Cultures, Literatures, and Linguistics (3), can be repeated for 6 credits*
*EALL 7706 provides hands-on training to learn how to develop and teach an undergraduate course, and it is offered on an individual basis. Find the instructor (graduate faculty) of an undergraduate course and obtain permission to do EALL 7706 from the instructor.

Required: Attend one DEALL DEI Pedagogy Workshop or one DEI Pedagogy-related event/workshop hosted by the Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning or other units on campus.**
**To satisfy this requirement, 1) attend a DEI workshop; 2) discuss how to address DEI in teaching with the instructor of a practicum course based partly on the workshop; and 3) incorporate DEI into a syllabus and teaching statement. At the end of the semester, the student and the instructor of the practicum course must send an email to the Graduate Studies Director and Coordinator to confirm that the DEI requirement was fulfilled for the certificate.

To apply:
- Advisor’s approval is required.
- To take EALL 7706, the instructor’s approval is required.
- Fill out the application form and send it to Prof. Etsuyo Yuasa, yuasa.1@osu.edu
Application for Teaching of East Asian Languages and Literatures Certificate |
To complete:
- Log into Grad Forms using your Ohio State username and password.
- Select “Graduation and Examination Forms.” Locate and select the “Application for Certificate Completion.”
- Select the completion term and certificate plan from the dropdown list.
- You will need to list the courses that apply to the Certificate.
- At this point, review the form for accuracy and then click “Save and Continue.”
- You will then be taken to the screen where you will need to click on the “Submit” button so that your request will be electronically routed to the program for review. Allow sufficient time between submitting your application and the deadline by which it must be to the Graduate School.
- Your application will be reviewed once it is received by the Graduate School.
