KOREAN 1101.01 - Level One Korean I: Classroom Track

4 credit hours

Standard modern Korean: development of listening and speaking skills; basic grammar; reading and writing of the Korean script (hangul). Classroom Track. Not open to native speakers or students with 3+ years at high school level.

Prereq: This course is not open to students with credit for 101.01 or 102.01. FL Admis Cond course.

1-4 credit hours

KOREAN 1102.03 - Level One Korean II: Bridge2

3 credit hours

A direct continuation of Korean 1101. Bridge course for students transitioning from the quarter to semester system.

Prereq: 102.01, or permission of instructor. Not open to students with credit for 1102.01, 1102.02, or 4 credits of 1102.51. This course is not open to native speakers of this language, to students with EM credit, or to students with 3 or more years of study in this language in high school, except by permission of the department. KOREAN 1102.51 - Level One Korean II: Individualized Instruction

1-4 credit hours

A direct continuation of Korean 1101. Individualized Track. Progress is sequential from one credit hour to the next with a demonstrated proficiency at the level of 80% required for advancement.

Prereq: 1101.01 or 1101.02, or 4 credit hours of 1101.51 or equiv. Advancement to the first credit in this course in the same semester as the completion of the 4th credit for 1101.51 requires registration for both courses, with permission of the instructor. This course is not open to students with credit for 102.51, 103.51, or to native speakers of this language through regular course enrollment or EM credit. Repeatable to a maximum of 4 credit hours or 4 completions. FL Admis Cond course.

KOREAN 1103.01 - Level Two Korean I: Classroom Track

Modern Korean intermediate level spoken communication, development of reading skills, and written composition. Classroom Track. This course is not open to native speakers of this language through regular course enrollment or EM credit.

KOREAN 1103.51 - Level Two Korean I: Individualized Track

1-4 credit hours

Focuses on intermediate-level spoken Korean communication, reading skill development, and written composition, tailored for students learning through an individualized track.

Prereq: 1102.03, 1102.05, 1102.01, or 1102.02 or 4 credit hours of 1102.51 or equivalent; and 101.51 and 102.51. This course is not open to students with credit for 103.51, 104.51, or to native speakers of this language through regular course enrollment or EM credit. Repeatable to a maximum of 4 credit hours or 4 completions. FL Admis Cond course.

KOREAN 2102.01 - Level Two Korean II: Classroom Track

Continuation of 1103.01.

KOREAN 2102.51 - Level Two Korean II: Individualized Track

Continuation of 1103.01/1103.51.

Prereq: 1103.01 or 1103.51, or permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 5 credit hours or 5 completions.

KOREAN 2231 - Elements of Korean Culture

3 credit hours

Surveys Korean religion, history, customs, performing and fine arts, literature, and social institutions from early history to the present day. Taught in English.

Prereq: This course is open to students with credit for 231. GE in cultures and ideas and diversity global studies course.

KOREAN 2451 - Korean Literature in Translation

3 credit hours

A close examination of masterpieces in Korean literature across genres for students with no previous academic training in Korean literature. All readings and discussions in English; college-level English reading and writing required.

Prereq: English 1110.01 (110), 1110.02, or 1110.03. This course is not open to students with credit for 251.

KOREAN 4101.01 - Level Three Korean I: Classroom Track

5 credit hours

Expands Korean oral and written proficiency, with a focus on vocabulary growth and Chinese characters (Hanja) within a traditional classroom setting.

Prereq: 2102 or equivalent with permission of instructor. This course is not open to students with credit for 507.01 or 508.01. 

This course is available for EM credit.

KOREAN 4101.51 - Level Three Korean I: Individualized Track

1-5 credit hours

Expanding oral and written proficiency in Korean; expansion of vocabulary and knowledge of Chinese characters. Individualized Track. Progress is sequential from one credit hour to the next, with a proficiency at the level of 80% required for advancement.

Prereq: 2102 or equivalent with permission of instructor. Not open to students with credit for 507.51 or 508.51. Repeatable to a maximum of 5 credit hours or 5 completions.

KOREAN 4102.01 - Level Three Korean II: Classroom Track

A direct continuation of Korean of 4101. Classroom Track.

KOREAN 4102.51 - Level Three Korean II: Individualized Track

A direct continuation of Korean 4101. Individualized Track. Progress is sequential from one cr hr to the next with a demonstrated proficiency at the level of 80% required for advancement.

Level Four Korean; development of integrated language skills at an advanced level, formal and informal communication, and discussion of contemporary social issues.

A direct continuation of Korean 5101.

KOREAN 5103 - Level Five Korean I

3 credit hours

Strengthening communication skills through oral and written reports of social and cultural issues; development of advanced proficiency in a variety of genres.

Prereq: 5102 or equivalent, or permission of instructor.

KOREAN 5256 - Interdisciplinary Topics in Korean Politics and Society

3 credit hours

Interdisciplinary Korean studies course in the social sciences, bridging Korean history, politics, gender, religion, philosophy, education, intercultural communication, and international relations. Taught in English.

Repeatable to a maximum of 6 credit hours.

KOREAN 5315 - Korean Language: Structure, Culture, and Communication

3 credit hours

Explores the structure, cultural context, and communicative uses of the Korean language. Taught in English.

Prereq: 1103, or equiv, or permission of instructor.

KOREAN 5380 - Korean Linguistics

3 credit hours

Examines the sound system, grammar structure, vocabulary, and writing system of the Korean language, along with key topics in language acquisition and everyday use.

Prereq: 1103 or equivalent, or permission of instructor. This course is not open to students with credit for 680.

KOREAN 5400 - Performance Traditions of Korea

3 credit hours

Cross-cultural and interdisciplinary exploration of cultural expressiveness in the context of Korean performance traditions; includes guided research, field work, ethnography, and performance workshop.

Prereq: 2231 or 2451, or Chinese or Japanese equivalents; or permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 9 credit hours.

KOREAN 5405 - Korean Dramatic Tradition

3 credit hours

Major works in the Korean dramatic tradition from ancient to contemporary eras. Includes historical and performative discourse, dramatic reading and enactment. Taught bilingually, sometimes in English and sometimes in Korean.

Prereq: 2102.01 or 5 credit hours of 2102.51 (205 and 206), English 1110 (110), or permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 6 credit hours.

KOREAN 5453 - Readings in Korean Literary and Classical Texts

3 credit hours

Advanced study of Korean language and literature in a cross-cultural context, by introducing selected narrative, drama, poetry, and critical essays in Korean. Includes literary translation.

Prereq: Completion of Level Three Korean, or permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 6 credit hours.

KOREAN 5455 - Interdisciplinary Courses in Korean Art, Music, Film, and Theatre

3 credit hours

Offers an interdisciplinary look at the history and criticism of Korean visual arts, music, theater, martial arts, healing practices, and film, exploring their broader meaning for humanity. Taught in English.
