Chinese 7382

This course focuses on the phonetics (articulatory and acoustic) and phonology of modern
(Mandarin) Chinese, introducing students to issues from cognitive and func-tional perspectives.
Students will have opportunities to learn to use speech analysis software (e.g., Praat) for audio
recording, annotation (see example below), and speech analysis, as well as other linguistic tools
for linguistic research, including applied linguistic research (second language acquisition,
linguistic pedagogy, etc.). Students may also select different subvarieties of Chinese for
cross-linguistic research.

Prerequisites: Chinese 5380 or permission of instructor
