Congratulations to Ai-Ling Lu, a PhD candidate in DEALL, for winning first place in the Humanities Oral Presentation at the 39th Edward F. Hayes Advanced Research Forum on February 28, 2025. She presented a talk titled “Beyond Q & A: Exploring Third Turns in Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) Classroom Interactions,” based on a portion of her dissertation. Her dissertation aims to develop a pedagogy that diversifies CFL learners’ interactional repertoires, enhancing their ability to co-construct intersubjectivity in cross-cultural interactions.

Ai-Ling would like to thank her advisor, Professor Xiaobin Jian (DEALL), and her dissertation committee members, Professor Carmen Taleghani-Nikazm (Germanic Languages and Literatures) and Professor Michiko Hikida (Teaching & Learning), for their valuable input and support. She also wishes to express her gratitude to the Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA) for supporting her dissertation through the Jiede Empirical Research Grant.

The Edward F. Hayes Advanced Research Forum showcases the innovative and exemplary research being conducted by Ohio State graduate students and postdoctoral scholars across the full range of graduate degree programs and research topics and facilitates fruitful exchanges between graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, the administration, and the public. Cash prizes, totaling more than $17,000, are awarded to the top-judged presentations in each academic area. Last year, Ai-Ling received second place at the forum for her talk on Taiwanese Indigenous Sinophone Poetry.
