Denton, Sieber, and He receive grant for research on Chinese play and playwright

“Global Citizenship: Ohio State University, Hong Shen, and the Modern Mediasphere,” a proposal submitted by Professors Kirk Denton and Patricia Sieber and DEALL doctoral candidate He Man, was awarded an Arts and Sciences Research and Creative Activity grant for $20,000. The grant will support the staging of a play entitled The Wedded Husband, written in English by the Chinese playwright Hong Shen (洪深) (pictured left) while he was a student at OSU and first performed on campus in 1919. He Man will produce the play, which will be directed by Professor Steven Si-yuan Liu (University of British Columbia). The grant will also support a symposium on the mediasphere in Republican China and the development of a Hong Shen special collection at the OSU Library (Hong Shen’s daughter, Hong Qian, will be donating some of her father’s books and other items to the library).
