HOW TO READ CHINESE DRAMA

Patricia Sieber (DEALL) and Regina Llamas (IE University) co-edited How To Read Chinese Drama: A Guided Anthology (Columbia University Press, 2022), a volume in the acclaimed "How To Read Chinese Literature" series. A multidisciplinary group of scholars from around the world shared their expertise, including DEALL graduate students Erxin Wang and Hui Yao. The book is a comprehensive and inviting introduction to the literary forms and cultural significance of traditional Chinese drama as both text and performance. Each chapter offers an accessible overview and critical analysis of one or more plays―canonical as well as less frequently studied works―and their historical contexts. In addition, bilingual excerpts from the plays together with supplementary materials (thematic table of contents, chronology of events, introduction, visual resources, bilingual glossary) make the plays more readily teachable. Meanwhile, a companion volume for language teaching and a digital resource center are also in the works.
