Timothy Thurston awarded prestigious Fulbright-Hays grant

Timothy Thurston, Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, is the recipient of one of the only 84 Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad grants awarded nationwide this year. At Ohio State, the Fulbright-Hays program is administered by the Office of International Affairs.

Thurston is conducting research for his dissertation in the Qinghai, Sichuan and Gansu provinces of western China, examining Tibetan Comedy and the Public Intellectual in A mdo via two popular forms of sketch comedy. Through textual analysis of performances and interviews with performers and audience members, Thurston will study how comedy allows us to understand the ways in which a culture understands itself, and how these particular comedies provide a context for understanding modern Tibetan culture, and minority cultures in general.
