Xiru Chen's research centers on the visual culture of rural Northeast China, with a particular focus on the intersection of contemporary rural theater and regional identity. Her current work explores the influence of rural performances on modern industrial culture in China, examining this through the lenses of the body and folklore. Through ten field studies, she investigates traditional performance forms such as Er Ren Zhuan, shadow play, and Yangge. In addition, Xiru is interested in exploring community dynamics within the working class and their connections to rural folk traditions, as well as the concept of family resemblance within Chinese folk performances. Her goal is to reveal how folk art subtly shapes societal values by analyzing the interactions between artworks, audiences, and performers.
