Huiyi Zhang is working on traditional Chinese theatre(xiqu 戲曲) focusing on Qinqiang opera(秦腔), regional identity, and the relationship between performance and cultural heritage. She has contributed to the National Social Science Foundation’s project Chinese Opera History (Heilongjiang Volume) and the National Arts Foundation’s Public Art Education Programme in Shanghai. Her experience also includes leading creative workshops in China and the UK, such as the Ikon Slow Boat Workshop in Birmingham and Reimagining The Little Mermaid at Birmingham Art School.

Her publications range from studies of Wang Guowei’s concept of tragedy in Song and Yuan opera to research on the British repertory movement, reflecting a cross-cultural approach to theatre and performance studies.
