Professor Danielle O. Pyun is a specialist in Korean as a Second and Foreign language (KSL/KFL) pedagogy. Her research brings together second language acquisition, language assessment, and the development of instructional materials that promote communicative competence and intercultural awareness.
Her research centers on the classroom acquisition of Korean as a second or foreign language, with a particular focus on learner variables, assessment practices, and task-based learning. Pyun’s work also extends to the development of curricular materials and pedagogical innovations that address the diverse needs of heritage and non-heritage learners. Her publications have appeared in Foreign Language Annals, System, Language, Culture and Curriculum, The Canadian Modern Language Review, The Korean Language in America, and Korean Linguistics, among others. Collectively, these studies examine how affective, cognitive, and sociocultural factors interact in second language learning, often drawing on corpus-based and empirical methodologies.
Her journal articles reflect a sustained engagement with the empirical study of Korean language learning. In “Attitudes toward Task-Based Language Learning” (Foreign Language Annals, 2013), Pyun examines how learners’ perceptions of communicative, task-centered instruction relate to learner variables, while her collaborative studies such as “Impact of Affective Variables on Korean as a Foreign Language Learners’ Oral Achievement” (System, 2014) and “Heritage Language Literacy Maintenance” (Language, Culture and Curriculum, 2014) investigate how motivation, identity, and affective factors shape language development. A cross-linguistic collaborative study, “The Effects of Sentence Writing on Second Language French and Korean Lexical Retention” (The Canadian Modern Language Review, 2012) demonstrates the impact of word-learning conditions as well as the influence of orthographic differences on lexical retention. Her corpus-based works, including “Discourse Functions of Korean ‘Yes’ Words” (Korean Linguistics, 2022) and “A Corpus-Based Analysis of Korean ‘Yes’ Words yey, ney, and ung” (The Korean Language in America, 2009), exemplify her interest in connecting linguistic analysis with pedagogical applications. She has also published numerous other research articles and book chapters on the teaching and learning of the Korean language and culture.
Pyun is the co-editor, with Andrew Byon, of The Routledge Handbook of Korean as a Second Language (Routledge, 2022), a landmark reference work that synthesizes current research on Korean language learning and teaching, including chapters on acquisition, assessment, and pedagogy by leading scholars in the field. Her own contributions to the volume include chapters on individual learner differences, KSL Assessment, and an overview of the field’s development. She is also the author of 500 Common Korean Idioms (Routledge, 2018), a reference book that bridges linguistic insight with practical learning strategies. In addition, she has co-authored several major Korean language textbook series, including Anytime Korean: Beginning 1 & 2 (Kong & Park USA Inc., 2020) and Colloquial Korean: The Complete Course for Beginners (Routledge, 2009).
As an educator and program builder, Pyun has been instrumental in advancing Korean language education at both collegiate and national levels. At Ohio State, she has taught a wide range of courses on Korean linguistics, language pedagogy, and culture, including Introduction to Korean Linguistics, Korean Language: Structure, Culture, and Communication, Teaching East Asian Languages at the College Level, Elements of Korean Culture, and all levels of language courses. She has also developed individualized instruction materials across multiple proficiency levels and led initiatives in curriculum design for language and culture learners.
As a certified ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) tester, Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) OPI tester, Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) rater, Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) rater, and Oral Proficiency Interview-Computer (OPIc) rater in Korean, Pyun has been contributing to advancing assessment standards in the field of Korean language education.
Her professional service extends well beyond her home institution. Pyun has held key leadership positions in major professional organizations, including serving on the Executive Committee of the Modern Language Association (MLA)’s Association of Language Departments (ALD) (Sept. 2023-Jan. 2026); the Executive Board of the American Association of Teachers of Korean (AATK) (2008-2021, 2020-2023); as Vice Chair of the ACTFL Korean Special Interest Group (2015-2017); as an overseas board member of the International Association for Korean Language Education (IAKLE) (2017-present); and as regional president of the World Association for Hallyu Studies (WAHS). She has also served on editorial boards, including The Korean Language in America (2009-2017), the Journal of Korean Language Education (2016-present), and as Associate Editor of Hallyu: The Korean Wave.
As Director of the Institute for Korean Studies (IKS) at Ohio State (2023-2028) and interim director of IKS (2020-2022), Pyun continues to strengthen the university’s academic and community partnerships while promoting innovative approaches to Korean language and cultural education.
Her work embodies a commitment to bridging linguistic research and classroom practice as well as cultural understanding, fostering both the growth of Korean Studies and the cultivation of intercultural competence in global education.
